Can you build muscle over 40 naturallly and without TRT? In this video, I am tackling this line of thought head on. This comes in the form of a question and answer sessions where we open up our comment section to our viewers to ask their most burning questions. One of the themes that repeatedly comes up is on the subject of how much muscle can be built over the age of 40 naturally.

I have to start this video with saying that I think we need to understand some of the limitations of our medical doctors. They aren’t always the best source of information when it comes to building muscle and physical fitness. An MD is not the first person I would seek advice from when it comes to training or building muscle as it is simply not their area of expertise (in most cases).

The next thing our asker gets wrong is the attitude of comparing themselves to others. Back when I was growing up, before social media, the only people I found myself comparing my body to were the guys in the bodybuilding magazines that of which I sought to achieve only 25% of their gains. I knew they were pros, so 25% seemed more realistic to me. Unfortunately, everyone is comparing themselves to others on social media these days and it feels that people are far more discouraged than ever.

Our asker was comparing himself to Joe Rogan and David Goggins. Joe Rogan has admitted to assistance when it comes to building muscle, but that doesn’t discredit the lifetime of work he has put into his body with training, nutrition, and combat sports training. To take away everything he’s done up to this point would be silly. And look at David Goggins, a man with a work ethic like you wouldn’t believe. He has claimed lifetime natural and I believe it. These two men look incredible over the age of 50, but it’s not without the dedication and discipline to get there.

When it comes to building muscle over the age of 40, I certainly know it’s possible, but there is a certain way that we need to train to really get the best results from our efforts.

First, there needs to be at least 3, ideally 4, days in a week dedicated to working out. This can come in the form of total body or an upper / lower split with training being dedicated to both strength and hypertrophy, not just one or the other. The reason for this is is that we lose strength and muscle mass with every passing decade and in order to preserve the muscle we have and the strength we have to complete every day tasks and prevent accidents, we need to work on both. Strength should be progressive but understand this, at this age, maintaining is gaining … both muscle and strength.

The way to build muscle through your workouts is to slow down your training and really command control over your reps. This will not only limit injuries or allow you to train through existing injuries, but it will also increase applied muscle tension. It’s also important to note that you need to train through full range of motion in order to maintain strength and integrity in our muscles, tendons, and joints. Partial repetitions are not necessary to build muscle and strength.

Your cardiovascular conditioning also becomes more important as you get over the age of 40 because of the metabolic slowdown that our bodies experience as we age. This is related to the muscle loss we experience each year as we get older as well.

Now, when it comes to being lean over the age of 40, nutrition is certainly the most challenging part. With 24 hours in a day, we usually dedicate 1 hour to our efforts in the gym and training – that means there are 23 hours left in the day that we need to get right in order to supplement that 1 hour in the gym and make a real difference in our body. That means watching our nutrition for those 23 hours in a day, which can be challenging as our lives get more hectic and full of responsibilities in our late 30s and 40 compared to our 20s and early 30s. It’s also at this time that you because of your age related metabolic slowdown, you may not be able to eat exactly as you did when you were younger.
