It starts, as it always does with nutrition. Look, there are no magic bullets that are going to alleviate the need to have to drop your body fat levels if you want to see ripped obliques and a trim waistline. That said, it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Here’s a simple jump off point that you can try to get a head start on getting your body fat levels down and getting rid of the love handles.

First, look in the mirror and see whether you can see that top row of abs or not. It doesn’t have to be super sharp. Even if you can see the top row rather faintly, then you would multiply your bodyweight by 15 to determine your target daily calorie intake. If you cannot, then multiply by 12 to get a slightly lower daily caloric starting point.

Eat consistently at this calorie level for the next two weeks and see if you are losing weight. If not, then drop by another 200 calories per day or so (up to 500 at the most aggressive) and reassess. Once you begin losing weight and body fat then you know you are on the right track and can continue until you reach your goal.

The next step is what you can do to supplement your calorie deficit through other means. This is where activity comes in to boost your overall calorie expenditure and minimize the requirements that it comes all from dietary changes. Here, walking is the most advisable form of activity to have the biggest improvement on your waistline. This is because walking can be done more regularly and with less impact on recovery – netting out to the most impactful calorie burn over the course of a week.

Running can be too hard on the joints for many, especially those carrying extra bodyweight, and isn’t likely to be as sustainable due to the higher effort required to do it at high intensities.

The third step is somewhat of a cheat code. Rather than focusing on ab exercises and exercises for your midsection think about the visual effect that having bigger, rounder shoulders and a wider back could have on narrowing your waist. Here you want to focus on performing exercises that target the middle delts like lateral raises and ones that target the lats like pulldowns or straight arm pushdowns.

Choosing the right exercises is key here and there are many specific ones laid out in the video.

Next, you can start to focus on the area that you likely wanted to focus on in the beginning and that’s your abs. The key here however is choosing the right ab exercises. It’s the top down movements that move your shoulders towards your pelvis that are not only easier to perform but likely to lead to development of the abs that will keep you motivated as you continue towards losing your love handles.

Remember, men tend to lose body fat in a top down manner. This means that you will see your abs before you lose your love handles. Making sure to train them to keep yourself motivated is key to getting the longevity required to get to the leaner waistline.

Finally, focus on the obliques. Don’t make the mistake of avoiding oblique exercises for fear of a “blocky waist”. This is not true. In fact, a well developed set of obliques is a requirement for love handles to be gone forever. Just remember to perform rotational ab exercises like the ones shown to ensure that your waist looks trim and the waist looks amazing once the body fat is gone.
